How to choose a server by name: the new ITPOD system simplifies hardware selection
Server naming system
ITPOD has developed a unified naming system for popular enterprise segment servers of General Computing and Vault series. Now each element of the equipment unit name contains specific technical information. Thus, the company simplified the selection and purchase of servers for partners and customers.
Principles of forming names of server equipment
ITPOD server company builds names from several blocks, each of which describes specific characteristics of the equipment:
- Processor type - the first letters of the name: - SL means compatibility with Intel Xeon; - SR means support for AMD EPYC.
- Form factor - three-digit number: - 101 means 1U server; - 201 means 2U configuration; - 401 means 4U enclosure.
- Number of sockets - letter after the hyphen: - D means dual-processor configuration; - S means single-processor board.
- Number of drives - the number of disk bays at the front of the enclosure. ITPOD offers options from 4 to 36 drives.
Decoding of connection types and processor generations
Backplane type - letter designations:
- R supports SATA and SAS drives without an expansion chip;
- RE supports the same interfaces with SAS Expander Chip;
- R-NV supports SATA, SAS and NVMe drives simultaneously.
The processor generation is the index at the end of the name:
- G3 stands for Intel Xeon Scalable Gen3;
- G4 stands for Intel Xeon Scalable Gen4/5;
- G5 stands for Intel Xeon 6;
- G2 stands for AMD EPYC 9004/9005 series.
Practical application of the new system
The system simplifies the selection of server hardware. Specialists can see the main characteristics from the model name without studying specifications.
Example of SL201-D25RE-G3 decoding:
- SL stands for Intel Xeon;
- 201 stands for 2U form factor;
- D stands for dual processor sockets;
- 25 stands for 25 front disk bays;
- RE stands for SATA/SAS with SAS Expander;
- G3 stands for Scalable Gen3 processors.
The approach is valuable when buying servers in bulk and comparing models quickly. The sale of server equipment becomes a transparent process, and customers minimize the risks of errors when ordering them.
ITPOD has implemented a unified system for all new models. The company will continue to develop the line of powerful Russian-made servers, providing equipment support through its own service center.
