ALocal Area Network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and other devices within a limited area, such as a home, office, school, or building. A LAN enables the exchange of data and sharing of resources (printers, files, applications) between connected devices with high speed and reliability.
The main characteristics of a LAN are:
- Geographic limitation - typically the range is less than a few kilometers.
- High bandwidth and low latency data transfer.
- Ability to scale and add new devices.
- Use of unique identifiers for devices - IP and MAC addresses.
- Support for different types of connectivity: wired (Ethernet), wireless (Wi-Fi) and virtual local area networks (VLANs).
LAN differs from wide area networks (WAN) by its smaller coverage and higher data transfer rate, which makes it ideal for organizing workgroups, home networks and corporate offices.
Thus, a LAN is a local area network that provides efficient and secure communication between devices within a limited area.
